How Introverts Can Thrive in Business
Introverts often get the message that success in business requires being the loudest person in the room. On this episode of the Own Your Awkward Podcast, Andy Vargo sits down with Giang Nguyen to explore a different path, one where purpose, mindset, and authenticity create real confidence. Giang shares how she learned to navigate networking, public speaking, and professional environments despite being “intensely introverted,” and why having a clear mission can transform fear into action.
For many people who identify as introverts, professional networking events, business mixers, and conferences can feel overwhelming. The expectation to confidently shake hands, start conversations, and promote your work can feel like a completely different language.
But Giang Nguyen has discovered something powerful. Confidence does not require you to change your personality. Instead, it can grow from clarity, purpose, and intentional mindset shifts.
Her story offers practical lessons for anyone who wants to succeed in business without pretending to be someone they are not.
From Introversion to Purpose
Giang describes herself as “intensely and desperately introverted.” That level of introversion can make environments like networking events feel exhausting or even terrifying.
Yet her professional work regularly requires her to show up in those spaces.
Instead of trying to become an extrovert, Giang reframed the situation entirely.
Rather than asking, “How do I become more outgoing?” she asked a different question:
“Why am I here?”
That simple shift changed everything.
When she focuses on the purpose behind being in a room, helping small businesses, connecting entrepreneurs, or sharing valuable resources, her attention moves away from worrying about herself.
Instead of thinking about how she appears, she focuses on the message she wants to share.
Giang describes this difference using a simple metaphor.
The purpose is the cake.
Everything else, nerves, appearance, and social pressure, is just the frosting.
And when you focus on the cake, the frosting stops feeling so overwhelming.
The “Possession” Technique for Confidence
One of the most memorable concepts Giang shares is something she jokingly calls the “possession” technique.
When she enters a professional environment where networking is required, she mentally separates her personal self from her professional role.
In her mind, the work itself “possesses” her.
Instead of feeling like she personally has to be charismatic or socially perfect, she becomes someone carrying out a mission.
She is there to represent her work.
She is there to support entrepreneurs.
She is there to help people.
This mental shift creates distance between her identity and the social pressure of the situation.
Suddenly, networking is not about personal performance.
It becomes a job to do.
And that makes it far easier to walk up to someone, shake hands, and start a conversation.
Lessons From Theater and Facing Fear
Another powerful influence on Giang’s mindset came from her experience in theater.
Performing on stage might sound like the worst nightmare for an introvert. In many ways, it was.
Before one performance, Giang experienced an intense panic attack. The fear felt overwhelming and physical, the kind of anxiety that convinces you something terrible is about to happen.
But something important happened next.
She still went on stage.
And once the performance started, the fear slowly faded.
That experience taught her a critical lesson.
Fear can feel enormous in the moment, but it is rarely permanent.
Sometimes the only way through anxiety is action.
Once you step forward and begin, your mind and body adjust.
The lesson stuck with her and eventually became part of how she approaches business challenges today.
Why Purpose Creates Confidence
One of Giang’s most powerful insights is that confidence is often misunderstood.
Many people believe confidence comes from charisma, personality, or natural speaking ability.
Giang sees it differently.
To her, confidence comes from purpose.
When you clearly understand why you are doing something, whether that is helping a client, supporting a community, or promoting a meaningful project, your attention shifts outward.
Instead of worrying about yourself, you focus on the impact you want to create.
That outward focus reduces self-consciousness and makes it easier to take action.
For introverts especially, this approach can be transformative.
It removes the pressure to be entertaining or socially dominant.
All you need is a clear reason for being there.
Building Community Through Small Business
Giang’s purpose-driven mindset shows up strongly in her professional work.
She plays an important role at the William Factory Small Business Incubator in Tacoma, where she helps entrepreneurs develop practical skills like financial literacy and digital marketing.
Small businesses often operate with limited resources and limited access to guidance.
By providing education and support, the incubator helps entrepreneurs grow stronger foundations for their companies.
For Giang, this work connects deeply with her values.
Helping others succeed gives her a powerful reason to step into uncomfortable environments like networking events and public conversations.
The mission makes the discomfort worthwhile.
And it also connects her to a vibrant local community of entrepreneurs working toward similar goals.
The Value of Being a “Hobby Hoarder”
Outside of work, Giang embraces what she calls being a “hobby hoarder.”
She loves exploring new creative interests, even if she never becomes an expert at them.
Painting, digital art, crochet, sewing, and other hobbies have all played a role in her life.
For Giang, the value of hobbies is not mastery.
It is the experiences and connections they create.
Some hobbies remind her of family members who taught her certain skills. Others connect her to teachers, friends, or meaningful moments in her life.
Each hobby becomes a thread in the story of who she is.
This mindset also reflects her broader philosophy on life.
Experiences do not have to lead to perfection to be meaningful.
Sometimes the value is simply the journey.
A Simple Philosophy for Growth
Toward the end of the conversation, Giang shares a simple perspective that guides many of her decisions.
When you try something new, one of two things happens.
If you enjoy the process, it can grow into a purpose.
If you do not enjoy it, it becomes a lesson.
Either way, you gain something valuable.
This mindset removes much of the fear around trying new things.
Instead of worrying about failure, you simply focus on learning and exploring.
And that approach aligns perfectly with the idea of owning your awkward moments.
Growth rarely happens in perfectly comfortable situations.
Sometimes it begins with a shaky handshake at a networking event, a nervous step onto a stage, or a conversation that feels a little awkward at first.
But those moments can also lead to confidence, connection, and unexpected opportunity.
