Dave Hannon on Teaching, Fatherhood, and Breaking the “I’m Not Worth It” Mindset
Tacoma singer-songwriter and middle school teacher Dave Hannon joins the Own Your Awkward Podcast to share how he learned to challenge lifelong negative self-talk and step into a healthier sense of self-worth. Through teaching, music, and becoming a father, Dave discovered the power of vulnerability, reflection, and authentic connection. In this conversation, he explains why creating safe environments for students and modeling emotional resilience can change lives.
The Quiet Battle of Negative Self-Talk
Many people carry an inner voice that quietly undermines their confidence. For Dave Hannon, that voice repeated the same message for years: “I’m not worth it.”
Like many forms of negative self-talk, it didn’t always show up loudly. Sometimes it appeared as insecurity, hesitation, or the urge to shut down emotionally. Other times it surfaced through self-criticism or comparing himself to others.
Dave realized that the most difficult battles are often internal. The stories we tell ourselves shape how we show up in relationships, careers, and creative work.
Acknowledging that inner narrative was the first step toward changing it.
Why Vulnerability Creates Real Connection
Dave discovered that hiding insecurities rarely helps. In fact, pretending everything is perfect often creates distance between people.
Instead, he began leaning into vulnerability.
Being open about struggles helped him build deeper connections with the people around him, especially his students, family, and wife. When someone shares honestly about their challenges, it creates permission for others to do the same.
That openness doesn’t mean oversharing or losing professional boundaries. Rather, it means being authentic enough for others to feel safe being themselves.
In the classroom, that authenticity can make all the difference.
Teaching Middle School: A Masterclass in Self-Awareness
Anyone who has spent time around middle schoolers knows they are navigating one of the most emotionally intense phases of life.
Dave sees his classroom as more than a place to teach music. It’s a space where students can learn about themselves.
He believes that traditional education often focuses too heavily on strict task management. Instead, Dave prioritizes building relationships first.
When students feel emotionally safe, several important things happen:
They become more willing to participate.
They share ideas and emotions more freely.
They begin developing their own voices.
Only after that foundation exists does deeper learning truly begin.
Breaking the “We’ve Always Done It This Way” Mentality
One challenge Dave sees in education is the tendency to stick to familiar routines simply because they are comfortable.
Many schools operate under an unspoken rule: this is how things have always been done.
But the world is changing rapidly. Students today will face careers, technologies, and challenges that educators cannot fully predict.
That means education must evolve too.
Dave believes teachers must become facilitators of learning rather than simply lecturers. Encouraging creativity, communication, and emotional intelligence prepares students for an uncertain future far better than rigid memorization.
Music as a Tool for Emotional Processing
Outside the classroom, Dave expresses himself as a singer-songwriter. Music plays a powerful role in how he processes emotions.
Sometimes that means leaning into sad or reflective music rather than trying to force positivity.
Dave jokingly refers to this as “wallowing” musically, allowing yourself to sit with difficult feelings rather than pretending they don’t exist.
Music provides a safe way to explore emotions that might otherwise remain unspoken.
This same concept carries into his teaching. Encouraging students to express themselves through music and creativity helps them understand their own emotional landscape.
Becoming a Father Changes Everything
One of the biggest shifts in Dave’s mindset came when he became a father.
Suddenly, the way he handled stress, conflict, and self-talk wasn’t just about him anymore. His daughter would be watching and learning from those responses.
He realized that children absorb far more from what adults model than from what they say.
If he wanted his daughter to grow up believing in herself, he needed to demonstrate what that looked like.
That realization pushed him to become more intentional about his reactions, his mindset, and the language he used with himself.
The Power of Mirror Work
One simple but powerful exercise Dave recommends is something called mirror work.
It involves standing in front of a mirror, looking yourself in the eye, and speaking affirmations aloud.
At first, it can feel awkward. Many people struggle to even maintain eye contact with themselves.
But that discomfort reveals just how disconnected we sometimes become from our own sense of worth.
By intentionally affirming positive beliefs, people can begin rewriting the internal scripts that have shaped their self-image for years.
It’s a small habit that can lead to big changes.
Owning Your Awkward
At its core, Dave believes owning your awkward means recognizing the parts of yourself you once tried to hide.
It means acknowledging insecurities instead of pretending they don’t exist.
And most importantly, it means choosing not to let those insecurities control your story.
This process is not a one-time transformation. Negative thoughts still appear. Self-doubt still happens.
But awareness creates the opportunity to respond differently.
Instead of shutting down, lashing out, or retreating into self-pity, people can pause, reflect, and choose a healthier response.
Listening to the Voice That Says “You Are Enough”
In a world full of noise, comparison, and pressure, quiet reflection becomes powerful.
Dave believes that when people slow down and truly listen, something remarkable happens.
Beneath the criticism and fear, there is another voice waiting to be heard.
A voice that reminds us we are enough.
Learning to listen to that voice is one of the most important steps in owning your awkward and stepping into your authentic self.
