What You Focus on Grows, Finding Joy and Authenticity with Ipek Williamson

What happens when you decide that joy is no longer optional? In this episode of the Own Your Awkward Podcast, Andy Vargo sits down with transformational life coach and meditation teacher Ipek Williamson to explore how making joy her North Star reshaped her career, identity, and everyday life. From owning an “awkward” name story to finding meaning after rock bottom moments, Ipek shares practical wisdom on authenticity, resilience, and giving yourself permission to change course.

Choosing Joy as a Turning Point

After turning 50, Ipek Williamson reached a moment of honest reflection. Life was not bad, but it was not lighting her up either. Instead of settling, she made herself a bold promise, from that moment on, she would only do things that brought her joy.

That decision became a turning point. Joy stopped being a bonus and became her filter. If something drained her energy or pulled her away from who she truly was, it no longer belonged in her life. This mindset shift did not just change her mood, it reshaped her entire path.

Ipek explains that joy became her North Star, a guiding principle she could return to whenever she felt uncertain. As she focused on joy, she noticed something powerful happen. More joy showed up. New opportunities, aligned people, and meaningful work began to appear almost effortlessly.

What You Focus on Grows

One of the central themes of the conversation is focus. Ipek shares a simple but profound truth, what you focus on grows. When her focus was stress, obligation, or survival, that was exactly what filled her days. When she shifted her focus to joy, fulfillment followed.

This shift led her to work she deeply loves, including becoming a meditation teacher on Insight Timer and supporting causes that resonated with her values, such as the non profit My Density Matters, which empowers women with knowledge around breast cancer.

Joy was not just a feeling, it became a strategy. By choosing joy first, clarity and momentum followed.

Giving Yourself Permission to Change Course

Many people stay stuck not because they are incapable, but because they feel guilty changing direction. Ipek challenges that mindset head on. She believes growth requires experimentation, and experimentation requires permission.

Trying something and realizing it is not for you is not quitting. It is learning. Ipek encourages listeners to let go of shame and obligation when a path no longer fits. Careers, relationships, and identities evolve, and honoring that evolution is an act of self respect.

This message resonates deeply with the Own Your Awkward philosophy. Growth is rarely linear, and authenticity often requires uncomfortable pivots.

Owning Your Awkward Name Story

One of the most memorable moments in the episode is Ipek’s story about her name. Growing up with a Turkish name in Canada meant frequent mispronunciations and awkward interactions. For years, she avoided the discomfort by using coffee aliases like Emma or Joy.

Eventually, she realized that hiding her name meant hiding a part of herself. Instead of shrinking, she chose to own it. She began correcting pronunciation, educating others, and embracing her name as part of her identity.

That shift transformed awkwardness from a source of embarrassment into a badge of honor. Her name became a conversation starter, a connection point, and a reminder that authenticity is powerful.

Finding Joy in Everyday Life

Joy does not only live in big decisions. Ipek shares practical ways to bring joy into everyday moments, even chores. Listening to music, dancing while cleaning, or pairing mundane tasks with something enjoyable can completely change your experience.

This approach reframes joy as accessible, not something you have to earn or wait for. Joy can be practiced daily, in small intentional ways.

From Executive Assistant to Coach

Ipek spent over 20 years as an executive assistant before a difficult job experience pushed her to what she describes as a form of career PTSD. Instead of rushing into the next thing, she slowed down.

Through consistent meditation and reflection, she kept asking one simple question, what is next? During one meditation, she heard a clear message, be patient.

That patience opened the door to learning how to teach meditation and eventually becoming a transformational life coach. What once felt like an ending became the beginning of work that now fills her with purpose and joy.

Resilience and the Gift Inside Struggle

Both Andy and Ipek reflect on how some of the hardest moments in life contain hidden gifts. Rock bottom experiences strip away what no longer serves you and create space for growth.

Ipek believes challenges are small tests from the universe, opportunities to build resilience and trust yourself. Looking back, she is grateful for the struggles that shaped her into who she is today.

This perspective does not dismiss pain, but it does offer hope. Even the worst experiences can lead to a more aligned and fulfilling life.

Final Thoughts, Be Authentic and Have Fun

Ipek closes the conversation with simple but powerful advice. Be authentic. Laugh at yourself. Own who you are.

Awkwardness is not something to fix or hide. It is a source of connection, laughter, and joy. When you embrace it, you give others permission to do the same.
