Embracing the Unthinkable Starts with Owning Who You Are
What if the most unthinkable thing you could do is simply be yourself? In this episode of the Own Your Awkward Podcast, Andy Vargo sits down with Swiss speaker, author, and coach Marcel Kuhn to explore how owning your awkward, surrendering to life’s currents, and embracing discomfort can lead to deeper fulfillment, resilience, and authentic living.
Marcel’s story is a powerful reminder that growth does not always come from pushing harder. Sometimes it comes from softening, surrendering, and trusting the flow of life.
Owning Your Awkward as a Superpower
Marcel shares that his “awkward” showed up early in life through his dry, understated sense of humor. As a kid, humor became a coping mechanism, a way to fit in when he felt different. Not everyone understood it, and for a long time, that made him question himself.
Over time, something shifted. What once felt like a liability became a strength.
Today, Marcel sees that same humor and storytelling ability as a superpower in his work as a speaker and author. Instead of trying to be more polished or universally understood, he embraced authenticity. That acceptance unlocked confidence, creativity, and deeper connection with others.
Owning your awkward does not mean performing it louder. It means no longer apologizing for who you are.
Surfing as an Allegory for Life
One of the most compelling parts of the conversation is Marcel’s use of surfing as a metaphor for navigating life. His connection to surfing began at 18 as an exchange student in California, where he describes the experience as feeling like coming home.
Surfing eventually became the foundation for his book, Unthinkable, and his philosophy of flow consciousness.
Life, like the ocean, has currents you cannot control. You can fight them, exhaust yourself, and panic, or you can learn how to read them and move with them.
In surfing, trying to overpower a wave rarely works. The same is true in life.
Surrender Is Not Giving Up
A core distinction Marcel makes is between surrendering and giving up. Many people confuse the two, but they are fundamentally different.
Surrender, as Marcel explains, is like performing a duck dive on a surfboard. Instead of fighting a wave head on, you dive under it, let it pass, and resurface on the other side. You are still moving forward, just in a smarter and more adaptive way.
Giving up stops movement altogether. Surrender keeps you in motion.
This lesson applies to relationships, careers, identity shifts, and personal growth. Resistance drains energy. Surrender creates flow.
When Identity Falls Apart
Marcel speaks openly about divorce, leaving a corporate career, and the grief that comes with major life changes. Losing the identity of being a married father felt like a death. The free fall that followed was terrifying, disorienting, and deeply human.
Yet that unraveling became the birthplace of Unthinkable.
By stepping into the unknown, starting his own business without a safety net, and allowing himself to grieve what was lost, Marcel created space for something new to emerge.
Transformation often requires mourning who you used to be before becoming who you are next.
Self Development as Undoing
One of Marcel’s most powerful reframes is his view of self development. Instead of becoming someone new, he believes growth is about undoing.
Undoing conditioning.
Undoing expectations.
Undoing borrowed definitions of success.
He compares this process to Michelangelo carving the statue of David, removing everything that was not David. The masterpiece was already there. It just needed to be revealed.
This perspective shifts growth from pressure to permission. You are not broken. You are buried under layers that no longer serve you.
Flow Consciousness and Real Insight
Marcel defines real insight as a moment that permanently changes the trajectory of your life. He uses the analogy of a balloon expanding. Once expanded, it never fully returns to its original size.
True insight changes how you see yourself, your choices, and your possibilities.
Flow consciousness is about aligning with those insights and allowing life to move through you rather than against you. It is not passive. It is deeply intentional and present.
Why Embracing the Unthinkable Matters
Unthinkable living does not require dramatic gestures. It begins with honesty. With choosing authenticity over approval. With surrendering control while staying engaged.
For leaders, creatives, parents, and anyone navigating change, Marcel’s message is clear. Strength is not rigidity. Resilience is adaptability.
And sometimes the bravest thing you can do is stop trying to prove yourself and simply be who you are.
