Owning Your Intuition, Turning Awkward Into a Leadership Superpower
In this episode of the Own Your Awkward Podcast, Andy Vargo sits down with executive leadership coach Fran Gallaher to explore intuition, trauma, and what it really means to be “fully smart.” Fran shares her deeply personal journey of growing up feeling awkward and misunderstood, and how embracing intuition became both her healing path and her leadership superpower. This conversation challenges the idea that intuition is mystical or rare, and reframes it as a practical, teachable skill anyone can develop.
When Awkward Starts Early
Fran Gallaher’s story does not begin in a boardroom or a coaching session, it begins in a childhood shaped by neglect, silence, and isolation. Growing up, Fran was discouraged from asking questions and often left alone for most of the day with little adult interaction. Food scarcity was a constant, though she did not realize it at the time, because being hungry was simply normal.
In school, Fran barely spoke until third grade. Teachers viewed her as quiet and withdrawn, while internally, her mind was anything but silent. She experienced intuition vividly, seeing non physical beings, sensing other lives and realities, and perceiving truth in ways that did not match the logical frameworks around her.
That disconnect created deep awkwardness. Fran did not think like others, did not process information the same way, and often felt labeled as “stupid” because her intelligence did not present itself in traditional ways. As she shared on the podcast, intuition kept her alive and aware, but it also isolated her.
The Unexpected Outlet of Expression
One surprising detail from Fran’s childhood story is how singing became a bridge to connection. While she remained silent in class, on the playground she would sing a memorized song, “Tell Laura I Love Her.” Other kids would gather just to listen. It was one of the few moments where her inner world found an outward expression that others could receive.
This small story hints at a larger truth that shows up throughout Fran’s life, awkwardness often hides unexpected gifts. What feels out of place in one environment may be exactly what creates connection in another.
Logic Without Intuition Leaves Us Half Alive
As Fran grew older, she learned to survive by disconnecting from feelings and relying purely on logic. For someone with a history of trauma, this made sense. Logic felt safer. Feelings felt dangerous.
But over time, this imbalance left her feeling empty and disconnected from herself. Therapy helped her process the past, but it was not until she allowed herself to explore metaphysics, spirituality, and intuition that things began to integrate.
Fran is clear about this, intuition is not the opposite of logic. It is a complement to it. As she puts it, intuition is simply one way the brain works. When we ignore it, we are not being rational, we are being incomplete.
“If you don’t develop your intuition,” she says, “you’re only half smart.”
From “Woo” to Work That Changes Lives
Today, Fran is an executive leadership coach and founder of Really Flourish, LLC. She jokingly refers to herself as a “Guru of Woo,” but her work is grounded, practical, and deeply impactful.
She shared a striking example during the episode, meeting a CEO for the first time and instantly sensing something was off. Within minutes, her intuition pointed to fraud and embezzlement happening inside the organization. A CPA later confirmed it. This was not guesswork, it was pattern recognition informed by intuition.
Fran helps leaders understand that intuition is not mystical magic. It is fast information processing, synthesis, and insight that often arrives as what we casually call an “aha moment.”
Intuition Is a Teachable Skill
One of the most empowering messages in this episode is that intuition is not reserved for a gifted few. Fran teaches intuition step by step, especially to high performing professionals like physicians and business leaders who have been trained almost exclusively in logic.
Her program, Shine: The Intuition Program for Unconventional Leaders, is designed to help people recognize, trust, and develop their intuitive insights. It combines education, group practice, meditation, and individual reflection.
Fran encourages starting small. Three to five minutes of meditation is enough to begin. Over time, intuition becomes less mysterious and more familiar, like strengthening a muscle you forgot you had.
Owning Your Awkward Makes You Whole
What makes this conversation such a perfect fit for the Own Your Awkward Podcast is that Fran does not glamorize her story. She does not bypass the pain. She integrates it.
Her awkwardness, her silence, her hunger, her intuition, all of it became part of her path to wholeness. Rather than trying to be “normal,” she learned to be whole.
For leaders, creatives, and anyone who has ever felt out of place, Fran’s message is powerful, the very thing that made you awkward might be the thing that makes you exceptional.
A New Definition of Smart
Fran invites us to expand our definition of intelligence. Being smart is not just about data, credentials, or logic. It is also about awareness, perception, and inner knowing.
When we combine logic and intuition, we do not lose credibility. We gain clarity.
And when we own our awkward, we stop fighting ourselves and start using everything we are.
